We partner with families to build or improve a place to call home

People in Philadelphia and all over the world partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. With our help, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.

Our Impact

Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia is looking for skilled contractors to work alongside us on our new construction and repair projects. We hire contractors for paid opportunities to ensure everyone in our city has a decent place to live.

Whole Home Repairs Win

In 2022, Habitat Philadelphia was proud to support the Whole Home Repairs Act. After months of organizing and building support, the Whole Home Repairs Act officially passed into the Pennsylvania state budget on July 8, 2022. This new state fund was introduced by Senator Nikil Saval and aims to support critical home repairs and weatherization.

Housing Trust Fund Win

On November 2, 2021 (election day), Philadelphia voters overwhelmingly supported ballot question 4 and secured an annual investment for the Housing Trust Fund. This investment allows 0.5% of the city’s budget, about $25 million, to be used for critical home repairs, homelessness prevention, affordable home production and other housing supports starting this year.

Upcycling Furniture into Art

Artist, Psychologist, Licensed Behavior Specialist, mother, wife, and ReStore shopper are just a few titles that describe Lilliana Didovic. Since 2015, Lilliana has been a regular shopper at Habitat Philadelphia’s ReStore on Washington Avenue. Lilliana purchases new and used furniture to transform them into one-of-a-kind pieces of upcycled art.

Breaking Ground at Queen Lane

Joining several other Habitat families in the Germantown neighborhood, the five-bedroom home will welcome an inter-generational family this spring. Home means safety and stability and generational wealth for years to come. While it has been a long journey for the family, a new, decent home will be a long-lasting legacy for both the family and the neighborhood.

Racial Covenants in Philadelphia

A tool used by early 20th century developers, builders and white homeowners; racial covenants prevented African Americans from accessing parts of the residential real estate market across the country. These covenants were obligations put in property deeds that forbade people of color from occupying or owning property.

The Building Hope Virtual Lunch-In 2022

We celebrated new innovations that empower families to secure the asset of their homes for generations to come. We also looked at the reframing of our Homeownership Program to make home accessible to more, and how we can work alongside the community to enhance the economic impact of the neighborhoods we work in.

Finally, children living in Habitat homes shared what home means to them.

Race and Housing Series

At Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia, our vision of a city where everyone has a decent place to live cannot be achieved without acknowledging the inhumanity endured by people of color for centuries. Racist housing policies such as redlining and restrictive covenants created a racial wealth gap in Philadelphia and throughout the nation. The effects of these policies are still experienced today.
