Habitat Philadelphia Earns Best Equity and Inclusion Through Construction Award

Habitat Philadelphia was honored to receive the 2024 Best Equity and Inclusion Through Construction award from Habitat for Humanity for its 21-unit housing development, Coltrane Commons.

Presented at the Habitat Affiliate Conference in March, the award recognizes construction projects that use a resident-inclusive approach to curb rapid gentrification and displacement.

In addition to engaging the Strawberry Mansion community for input on naming the development (in honor of jazz great John Coltrane), Habitat Philadelphia made an intentional effort to match the existing architecture and character of the neighborhood, incorporating covered porches and detailed cornices and brickwork.

Coltrane Commons also represents Habitat Philadelphia’s first foray into multi-family homes, which presents a unique opportunity to create more affordable homes by increasing density and expanding access to a variety of family types and income levels.

Director of Real Estate Development, Ed McColly, accepted the award on Habitat Philadelphia’s behalf and said, “This is an honor for our organization, as we strive to build community through authentic relationships with our neighbors.”
