Each summer teams of summer associates form area law firms in Philadelphia join together to help build a Habitat home through Buildable Hours, Inc., a non-profit organization created to give summer associates and attorneys a way to contribute to their community. Each firm commits to spending a day throughout June and July working on-site and to investing $5,000 - $10,000 needed to build a home in partnership with Habitat Philadelphia.
"One of the big attractions of the program is that the $5,000 that each firm contributes is part of their summer associate program budget, so it's not new money" says Lori Knauer, Habitat Philadelphia Board Member and, incidentally, a lawyer herself. For many firms, this budget item is often spent on an associate cocktail party or similar benefit. Buildable Hours offers an attractive alternative to law associates and employees interested in community service and social justice/advocacy.
Greater Philadelphia area firms that are interested in supporting the work of Buildable Hours or becoming involved in future projects may contact Habitat Philadelphia: Development Director, 215.765.6000, ext. 22.
