Seven New Homes on Stiles Street in West Philadelphia Built to LEED Standards
PHILADELPHIA, PA, September 25, 2008 -Mayor Nutter will cut the ribbon at a media event marking the completion of the first three of seven new houses being built by Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia in partnership with Habitat families and volunteers. The event will take place on Thursday, October 23rd at noon at 4210 W. Stiles Street in the Parkside neighborhood in West Philadelphia. The Mayor will acknowledge the work of Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia in providing sustainable affordable housing. A Habitat partner family member will also speak about the difference the organization has made in her life. Habitat partner families are required to contribute 350 hours of "sweat equity" in building their houses and others in order to qualify for the no-interest mortgage provided by Habitat. The public will also have the opportunity to tour a house furnished with contemporary eco-friendly furniture designed by students from the University of the Arts' Industrial Design program.
These homes will be the first LEED-certified affordable housing constructed in Philadelphia. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of "green" buildings. LEED certification means that these homes are energy efficient, resulting in lower utility costs for our low-income homeowners and a cleaner environment for all of us. These Habitat homes are on track to meet the more stringent requirements for a Silver LEED certification, a step above the Certified level.
"These homes would not have been possible without the generosity of our house sponsors," said David W. Feldman, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia. Those sponsors include: GlaxoSmithKline, JP Morgan Chase, Lincoln Financial Foundation, the Patrick F. Monaghan Memorial Foundation, Nationwide, and US Airways. House sponsors also sent work crews to help build the houses along with Habitat construction staff, AmeriCorps members, and partner families. Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia is seeking sponsorships to complete the remaining four homes.
